Chapter Twenty-Three
(Friday)
Jamie
I felt odd. Stiff, but at the same time, more relaxed than I had in a long time. I opened my eyes cautiously. Smiling, I attempted to sit up, Scott was there, propped up against his bed, but still sitting on the edge of mine somehow. I moved my arm, unintentionally jostling him awake. He stared at me. I noticed the dark circles under his eyes and his dry lips as he watched me. He looked drawn, more ill than he obviously felt.
He whispered to me, âJamie, Iâm so happy that you are okay, I was so worried about you,â his voice sounded raspy like he had been in a desert for weeks. It was then I noticed the âcollarâ was still around his neck. I bolted upright, forgetting my injured wing, gasping at the pain, but ignoring it again, I had more important concerns.
âScott, wait there, I will be right backâ¦â I rushed from the room towards the bathroom, filling a glass with water. I carried it back to the bedroom a little more carefully than I had exited. Scott hadnât moved, he was in exactly the same position as I had left him.
I held the glass of water to his cracked lips. He didnât drink it, it just dissolved into his skin. I repeated the exercise, calling downstairs as I did so. On my third trip, Scottâs parents had joined us. He was starting to look a little more like himself, not quite so haggard-looking. Evelyn and Michael were speechless. After the fourth glass, Scott was able to stand, with Michaelâs assistance, we managed to get him into the bath, and turn on the faucet.
What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. Michael supported Scottâs head as the water flowed around him, he seemed to be glowing. Wait. They both were glowing; Scott and his father. Evelyn pulled me back towards the door, as a strange noise echoed off of the walls.
I didnât know what was happening. The noise got louder and louder, almost deafening. I could see Scott submerged in the water, Scottâs father holding him as the room got warmer and warmer as they got brighter somehow, I had to shield my eyes. Evelyn had left the room behind me, she was trying to pull me with her, but I was frozen to the spot; fascinated by the events unfolding before me.
Then it all stopped.
Everything returned to normal, I could still hear the strange noise echoing in my head, Scott was still submerged, Michael still supporting him. They were back to normal colour now. I started forwards, further into the bathroom. Evelyn trailing closely behind me. Scott reached toward me as he noticed my approach. I took over from Michael, finally stopping the faucet from gushing. As I knelt beside the bathtub, Michael stood, almost falling to the ground, before Evelyn caught him.
âWhat just happened?â I had to ask, so many questions forming in my mind chasing the noise away. Scott still felt hot, although the water surrounding him was ice cold.
